A legal document filed to start the probate process, requesting that the court formally recognize the decedent’s will and appoint an executor (or administrator if there is no will) to manage the estate. The petition for probate also notifies interested parties, such as heirs and creditors, that probate proceedings have begun. The court will review the will (if available) and verify its validity before granting authority to the executor to handle the estate’s affairs.
