What is a Letter of Special Administration?

Temporary authority granted by a court to an administrator to manage urgent estate matters while probate proceedings are ongoing.

A temporary legal document issued by a court allowing an individual to manage specific affairs of a deceased person’s estate before full probate proceedings begin. This may be necessary to protect estate assets, handle urgent matters, or conduct transactions that cannot wait for the appointment of a permanent executor or administrator. Letters of special administration are limited in scope and duration.
