What is a Predeceased Beneficiary?

A beneficiary who has died before the decedent. Depending on state laws and the terms of the will or trust, the predeceased beneficiary’s share may pass to their descendants or be redistributed among other beneficiaries.

A beneficiary who is named in a will or trust but dies before the person creating the will or trust (the decedent). If the will or trust does not specify what happens in this case, the distribution of the predeceased beneficiary’s share may depend on state law or whether the document includes provisions like per stirpes or per capita. In a per stirpes distribution, the predeceased beneficiary’s descendants would typically inherit their share.
