What is a Per Stirpes Distribution?

A method of estate distribution where descendants inherit by branch, meaning the share of a deceased beneficiary is divided among their descendants. If a child predeceases the decedent, that child’s share passes to their heirs.

A method of distributing an estate where the descendants of a deceased beneficiary inherit that beneficiary’s share. This is often used to ensure that the children or other descendants of a predeceased heir still receive their portion of the estate. The distribution follows family branches, meaning each branch of the family tree inherits equally, regardless of how many descendants are in each branch. This method is commonly used in wills to maintain generational equity.
